Abstract

This paper attempts to describe the transformation in the way the motorcycle taxi (ojek) is used and managed in a developing country. Using sociotechnical lenses, the roles of ICT in the transformation are unfolded and analysed. The paper also addresses the threat to oversimplification of the phenomenon due to black boxing the notions of “ICT” and “societal changes.” In doing so, it draws the inspiration from the conceptual framework of Lee, et al. [1] and unpacks the roles of ICT into technology, social, and information artefacts. Further analysis shows that transformation in the management and use of ojek comprises changes in employment modes, business models, governmental policies, and some other issues. Using indigenous concepts and phenomena, it is expected that this paper can contribute to the body of knowledge on ICT and its use in developing countries, and eventually on the potential roles of ICT in promoting development.
