Abstract

Indian railways have been facing a serious problem of railroad accidents at unmanned railway level crossings. The study presents the Information and Communication technology enabled modeling of safe distance for road vehicles approaching at Indian unmanned railway level crossings. The purpose of study is the computation and analysis of the speed breaker distance to provide a safer distance to road vehicles arriving towards the unmanned railway level crossings. Information and Communication Technology i.e. integrated GPS, GIS; sensor-based data collection was done from 19 unmanned railway level crossings on Shahdara-Shamli-Tapri railway route. The ‘speed breaker distance from crossing’ modeling and validation has been performed using regression analysis in IBM SPSS Statistics 24.0. The sensitivity analysis results indicated that, the perception and reaction time is the most contributing factor for speed breaker distance from crossing determination. The accidents are predicted to decrease 17% (approx.) with developed ‘speed breaker distance from crossing’ model. Therefore, the scope of the work lies in road user safety at unmanned railway level crossings.
