Abstract

Abstract : The dilithio salts of o-, m-, and p-carborane were reacted with selected chloro derivatives of germanium and tin. In the germanium series, disubstituted o-carborane derivatives were formed as in the similar silicon chemistry, but the germanium m- and p-carborane products obtained were mixtures of disubstituted monomers and related polymers. In analogous reactions of the dilithio salts with various substituted dichloro tin derivatives, it was found that the substituents have a marked influence on the type of derivative formed. Where the substituents were alkyl groups, the o-carborane products contained distannocyclohexane rings while the m- and p-carborane products were exclusively polymers. In syntheses involving (C6H5)2Sn.Cl2, a variety of products was obtained including mono- and di-substituted compounds as well as linear polymers of considerable molecular weight. (Author)
