Abstract

The Benedictine cloister attached to the cathedral of Monreale preserves the largest as well as the most impressive group of sculptures to survive from the period of Norman domination over Sicily and southern Italy. Situated only a few miles from Palermo on the slope of a rugged hill, it overlooks a fertile valley with the shores of the Mediterranean in the near distance. The cloister was built during the relatively short period of years between 1172 and 1189 by William II.2
