Abstract

This study deals with the Iconography of the Blessed Mariana de Jesus (1565-1624), an important person of high interest during the XVII century in Madrid. However, it is not only a question of making an inventory of images; but also knowing her biography and setting her iconographic type and her attributes. The images analysed in this study belong to such different techniques as sculpture, painting or engraving; moreover, the chronology among them is very wide, from the 17th century to nowadays. For instance, carvings of Julian San Martin and Juan Pascual de Mena, a canvas of Vicente Carducho and various engravings of Palomino or Luis Fernandez Noseret. We should highlight the print of the old Puerta de Alcala, where her figure took part in the decoration, proving the importance of the Mercedarian in that period.
