Abstract

In November 1996 the International Council of Museums (ICOM) will celebrate fifty years of service to the museum community. During its half‐century of existence, ICOM has played a significant part in the explosive development of museums of every kind in every part of the world. We fact that the great majority of today's museums are younger than ICOM itself bears witness to the council's influence and its unflagging commitment to the development and promotion of museums and a worldwide museum profession.
