Abstract
January 2002 marked another milestone in the history of the International Center for Orthopaedic Education (ICOE). The ICOE is proud to welcome two new sponsors, The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) and the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF). The addition of these two orthopaedic institutions alongside the other cosponsors, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and Orthopaedic Hospital in Los Angeles, helps to ensure that the ICOE can provide its humanitarian services to the world orthopaedic community for years to come. Currently the ICOE lists more than 2300 clinical, research, teaching, and service experiences in seventy-eight countries on six continents. Of these offerings, 36% are short-term (less than three months), 36% are long-term (more than three months), and 28% are flexible (time arranged by offerer and applicant). Thirty-five percent of the experiences are associated with some financial support, and 21% provide housing; 40% provide low-cost housing. Since the ICOE's inception in 1994, orthopaedic surgeons from about 115 countries have filed more than 6700 applications.
