Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine allele frequencies and other statistical parameters of interest in STRs widely used as tools for forensic investigations in an Icelandic population sample. The individuals were analysed using the AMPFlSTR®SGM Plus™ system (n=110) and the PowerPlex® Y-system (n=76) as described by the manufacturer. For the ten autosomal STR loci the observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.764 (vWA) to 0.891 (FGA). No significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium was observed. For the Y-chromosome polymorphisms 64 different haplotypes were observed in the 76 male samples analysed. No haplotype was observed more than three times in the population sample. The haplotype diversity when combining all loci was 0.995.
