Abstract

Anyone could take the wrong turn driving on the featureless Arctic plains. It happened to Michael Corrigan — no novice on winter roads. En route to meet the transport delivering a new piece of equipment to his camp near Deadhorse, Alaska, he ended up at a well site instead. He asked a group of roughnecks if they had spotted a large trailer within the last hour or so. A yes or no would have done — 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle chances are better for polar bear than for motor vehicle sightings. Nonetheless, they wanted specifics.
