Abstract

Incoherent neutron inelastic scattering (INIS) data for polycrystalline ice Ih are presented for E0= 240 cm−1, θ8=18°, T=82°K, E0=443 cm−1, θ8=25°, T=82°K, and E0=30 cm−1, θ8=65°, T=250°K. These data and other INIS measurements are analyzed in terms of a lattice-dynamical model for ice Ic with ordered hydrogens, the dynamics of which are very similar to ice Ih. Dispersion curves, the frequency distribution, rms amplitudes of displacement, and specific heat are calculated from the model; INIS cross sections, including two-phonon contributions-which are found to be significant in some cases-are also calculated. Calculated values and the various measurements are found to be in very good agreement.
