Abstract

In August 2007, at the Twenty-third International Cartographic Conference and Fourteenth General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association in Moscow, a new ICA commission was established. The Maps and Society Commission was proposed to reflect the profound social changes through which the cartographic professions are progressing. Its terms of reference are to facilitate and encourage the use of social scientific and critical approaches to mapping and to encourage a more active engagement between cartographers and other groups in society engaged in mapping activities.
