Abstract
Purpose In today’s rapidly changing and highly competitive world, strategic leadership skills have become important to all professions and essential for small professions such as Medical Physics. A practical to-do list is important. Methods The author reflects on his own personal experiences of leadership at the national, European and international levels and his readings on the subject and summarizes these experiences in a short to-do list. Results Essential items on the to-do list are: to clarify vision, to decide on the style of leadership to adopt, to have a deep personal commitment, to conduct an honest personal SWOT audit, to conduct an honest SWOT audit of your team/departmental/profession, to develop a practical strategic plan for achieving the vision, to persevere till the vision is achieved, to prepare the next generation of leaders. Conclusions It is hope that this short to-do list will help others develop their own leadership skills.
