Abstract

An abridged version of this article was presented as the acceptance speech for the 2019 Eric Berne Memorial Award at the 50th Anniversary Conference sponsored by the Southeast Institute, the USA Transactional Analysis Association, and the International Transactional Analysis Association in Raleigh, North Carolina, on 3 August 2019. The speech highlights the development of a relational trend within transactional analysis and delineates the author’s own integration and development of Berne’s original thinking. Additionally, the author makes a plea for the further consideration and integration within clinical work of the therapist’s countertransference reactions.
