This is an interesting, well-written, and thought-producing book, telling the heart-warming story of a man who, beginning life on an isolated farm in Idaho, and without money to help him, managed by dint of very hard work to get his education in physiology. Eventually, he worked his way up to a position as the distinguished head of the department of physiology of the University of Chicago. Ingle tells us very frankly many details of his life and his struggle upwards from poverty to security. He tells much of the lives of the people about him from his days in an Idaho village to his days in several big laboratories. Some years ago, he did a splendid thing for thinking physicians and scientists in all fields when he founded the journal Perspectives in Biology and Medicine .
