Abstract

ABSTRACT Throughout recent rock discourse, the term dad rock has been used selectively to describe rock music and its ethos. By seeking an expanded definition of dad rock, this article explores contexts which have shaped its current use. Informed by literature pertaining to rock music culture, masculinity, and the rock canon, this exploration will determine the identities, eras, and sounds which are susceptible to the dad rock label. This will be further supplemented through accounts from online discourse and a quantitative analysis of tracklist data collected from nine dad rock playlists and compilation albums.
