Abstract

The contributions to this celebratory volume in honour of Michael Lattke are arranged in alphabetical order by author. Pauline Allen reads the Mariology of John 2:1–11 as interpreted by Augustine of Hippo as primarily about the refutation of Manichaeans; she questions whether Augustine's insistence on reading the whole passage as a mystery can contribute much to the scholarly assessment of the development of the cult of Mary. Sebastian Brock provides a translation of Jacob of Serugh's poem on the Sleepers of Ephesus; the translation is from Vatican Syr. 115 with notes indicating the variant readings in the later Vatican Syr. 217, which are mostly secondary expansions. James Charlesworth wonders positively whether the naming of the Son of Man in the Parables of Enoch (1 Enoch 48:2–3) influenced the author of the Odes of Solomon (36:3), providing the detail that now explains his cross-reference in the 1985 Old Testament Pseudepigrapha (vol. 2, p. 765). Johan Ferreira courageously strives for righteousness according to the Gospel of Matthew, understanding it, in continuity with scriptural antecedents, as right human conduct in the weightier matters of mercy and justice in response to God's righteousness, which is the coming of the Kingdom. Majella Franzmann studies the teaching and perspectives on women in the Kephalaia of the Teacher and the Manichaean Psalm Book, concluding that while there is much positive use of female metaphor, the actual work of women in bearing children is as problematic for Manichaeism as for Gnostic groups in general.
