Abstract
Even though they completed their college-level math requirements, four participants chose to take more classes after college algebra. At the time of the interviews, three students shared their experiences with higher level math courses. Unfortunately, these students struggled in their pre-calculus and calculus classes. The overall rigor and abstractness of these classes inundated the students. Their experiences in these courses left them questioning whether they could handle higher level math courses. In this chapter, I also presented findings from interviews with community college faculty who have worked with former developmental math students who attempt calculus. My goal was to provide guidance for these students to assist them with the rigors of higher level math. The faculty asserted that there is a major difference between attempting pre-calculus and calculus with a developmental math background as opposed to a thorough high school math background. The faculty members suggested several strategies that former developmental math students can take to deepen their math knowledge base to prepare for calculus.
