Abstract
The text has its starting point in the analysis of the reciprocal imaginary of Europe and Islam, and the role of media in its construction. The role of conflict and conflictual situations concerning Islam, their default starting point usually based on exceptional cases, shows that they play the role of hermeneutical incidents, that deviate the attention from normal expressions of Islamic identity. In the conclusion it is put in evidence the fact that Islam in Europe plays the role of a substitutive discourse on cultural and religious pluralism, that is not addressed as such.
