Abstract

This interview explores Wendy Phillips' writing process for her first published book Fishtailing. Drawing on many of Phillips' own experiences as a teacher-librarian, the novel tells the story of four teenagers, their English teacher, and a guidance counsellor, and the tragedy that unfolds when one of the teenagers plays a game which banks on her colleagues' very real desires. Fishtailing has won the 2010 Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature—Text, was named a finalist of the Ontario Library Association's White Pine Young Readers Choice Award, and was shortlisted for the Saskatchewan Book Award for Publishing.
