Abstract

Part III, which includes this chapter and Chapters 6, 7, depicts the experiences of guardians and their companion animals in the nuclear disaster-affected areas in Fukushima Prefecture. This chapter relates the life story of Ms. Hitomi Sato, who lost her dog and one of her cats during evacuation from a nuclear disaster. It provides a micro-viewpoint as to how Hitomi experienced the evacuation from a nuclear plant accident. Her experience was different from that of the Ryoichi and Yayoi Suzuki in Chapter 3 not only because she had more animals. For example, the areas in Fukushima will be polluted for a long time. Her relationships with her cats, dog, and cows were disrupted when she was evacuated from the nuclear disaster area. Her home is in a radioactively contaminated area and she can’t return home still now. She continues to suffer from an uncertain future. Hitomi was separated from not only her home and animals but also from family members previously close to her. The relationship with her brother broke down over a disagreement concerning whether to accept the monetary compensation offered by the Tokyo Electric Power Company. Hitomi’s story provides insight into the complexities facing those who had been evacuated from a nuclear power disaster.
