Abstract

Sizeism occurs when people are negatively judged by the size of their body. Existing literature suggests that sizeism can create distress that can negatively impact psychological well-being for larger bodied individuals. This phenomenological study looked at six Latinx women who identify as larger-bodied and their experiences with the phenomenon of sizeism. Data analysis generated three primary themes: Growth Toward Affirmation, Creation of Self-Identity, and Intersection of Societal and Cultural Norms. Findings are discussed with respect to these themes; essentially, that sizeism has an impact on wellbeing and identity of Latinx individuals.
