Abstract

The article focuses on the speech act of complaint in Polish, using as the point of departure some of the already existing reports on complaining behaviour, which is regarded in scholarly sociological literature as the Polish cultural norm. Statistics show Poles enjoy complaining and engaging in troubles-talk, which clearly points to deliberateness in their communication style. Of special interest in this paper are indirect complaints directed at a third party, with particular attention drawn to the expression of emotions. The analysis draws upon the corpus of speech samples collected in 2015–2017 in southern Poland. The presentation of Polish language data revolves round indirect, third-party complaints, with special focus upon their linguistic features and how emotional expression can affect the language used in the entire speech event in which complaints have been observed.
