Abstract

RECENT work1,2 has shown the sigmoidal nature of the change of the dynamic shear modulus with the amplitude of oscillation of carbon black loaded rubber vulcanizates. Fig. 1 is a typical shear modulus dynamic strain amplitude curve for 37 per cent by volume of high-abrasion furnace black in polychloroprene rubber. Also plotted in Fig. 1 is the out-of-phase component of the dynamic shear modulus G″. The curve relating G″ to amplitude shows a maximum at the point of inflexion of the G′ curve. As the G′ curve is sigmoidal, values of G0 and G∞ can be derived1,2, where G0 is the real part of the shear modulus G′ at very low dynamic strain amplitudes and G∞ the shear modulus at very high strains, so G0–G∞ is the total modulus change between low- and high-strain oscillations.
