Abstract

Existing schemes of interaction between heaving soils and immovable foundations are analyzed. Individual deficiencies are noted for use of results of these investigations in determining the uplift of shallow foundations on heaving soils, and the possibility of determining additional forces in foundations subject to nonuniform heaving of soil. A hypothesis regarding the distribution of normal forces induced by frost heaving against the lower surface of solidly frozen layers of soil beneath foundations with allowance for their strength and observance of equilibrium between the loads on the foundations and the normal forces induced by frost heaving, and also an engineering method for their determination are proposed.
