Abstract
The term “hypoplasia of the vertebral artery” often used in clinical practice, is not exactly defined. We studied vertebral angiograms of 160 patients, paying attention to seven defined points, measuring the inner diameter of the vertebrobasilar arteries. The frequency of hypoplasia was recorded. The findings in patients with vertebrobasilar insufficiency (VBI) were correlated with those of other neurological patients. VBI patients had a significantly higher rate of vertebrobasilar hypoplasia and those with vertebrobasilar hypoplasia had permanent neurological deficits more frequently than other VBI patients.
