In patients with hypoparathyroidism, either idiopathic or postsurgical, the administration of 1α(OH)D 3 orally causes elevation and normalization of blood calcium largely through the enhanced absorption of calcium. This seems to occur after conversion of 1α(OH)D 3 to 1α,25(OH) 2 D 3 in the body
