Abstract

Although hypochondriasis is recognized as a specific neurosis, no definitive syndrome has been delineated descriptively or psychodynamically. The term has become a grab bag for a variety of poorly defined medical and psychiatric problems. Patients are too often labeled as “crocks” and not considered amenable to help. A clearer delineation of hypochondriasis, on both descriptive and psychodynamic levels, can provide the basis for better and more appropriate treatment.
