Abstract

AbstractA 51‐year‐old woman presented with dissociative amnesia for a 12‐year period from the age of 37 to 49. The amnesia seemed to be triggered by a car accident at age 49. She sustained no serious physical injury, nor did she have symptoms of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). There was no evidence of organic factors causing her memory loss. A method of hypnotic uncovering was used to facilitate retrieval of significant personal memories, and to help her resolve traumatic events, which she related as having happened during that 12‐year period. She regained a meaningful autobiographical history, which enabled her to get on with her life. Copyright © 2002 British Society of Experimental and Clinical Hypnosis
