Abstract

Abstract It was hypothesized that it would be possible and effective to induce hypnosis by telephone in patients who have previously experienced hypnosis induced by the investigator. A selected group of dental patients of the investigator were used. A standardized procedure for induction is described and the method of its use elucidated. In two interesting exceptions, the standard procedure was not used. Each subject was called by telephone at a time conducive to a relaxed atmosphere; hypnosis was induced, the state terminated, then the experience of the subject discussed. The comments by the patients about their experiences are presented. The 100% effectiveness in this selected group of patients is discussed. It is concluded that hypnosis can be induced by telephone in subjects who have previously experienced hypnosis in a therapeutic atmosphere.
