Abstract

Introduction: The development of acute lung injury involves production of the IL-8 family of chemokines that recruit activated neutrophils to the lung. Alveolar macrophages and small airway epithelial cells (SAECs) are the primary cells of the alveolus responsible for neutrophil chemotaxis. Hypertonic saline (HTS) is an anti-inflammatory mediator which has been shown to decrease pulmonary neutrophil infiltration and overall lung injury. We hypothesize that hypertonic saline inhibits production of the IL-8 family of chemoattractants produced by these pulmonary cells.
