Abstract

Hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease) in children is rare, the incidence being from 1 to 2.5 per cent of all cases of Graves' disease. Atkinson (1) reported 208 cases, Sattler (2) 184 cases, Kennedy (3, 4) 171 cases, and Bram (5) 128 cases; many other have reported smaller series of cases. Few have given any detailed follow-up information. The present report concerns 50 children ranging in age from 2 to 15 years, with thyrotoxicosis, who were observed in the Albany Hospital from 1918 to April 1955. In 75 per cent of the cases there was a clinical follow-up, which provided an unusual opportunity to evaluate the clinical manifestations of this disease, its course and its effect on the body's maturative processes. Important information regarding treatment was also obtained.
