Abstract

This evidence-based project aims to improve and standardize management of severe hypertension in intrapartum patients. Hypertension complications are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. Severe complications from a hypertensive crisis during intrapartum are almost completely preventable with proper identification and management in a hospital setting. Three goals were established for the evidence-based project: first, timely identification and notification of primary providers about a hypertensive crisis, which is defined as systolic blood pressure more than 160 or diastolic blood pressure more than 110 for two measurements within 15 minutes; second, treatment initiation within 60 minutes of a second elevated reading; and third, use of standard first-line drugs.
