Abstract

H YPERTENSION in pregancy was reviewed by one of us (M.D.L.) in this journal in 1989, I the article focusing on preeclampsia, and highlighting several unresolved controversies regarding management of this disease. More recently, a report of the Working Group on High Blood Pressure in Pregnancy convened by the National High Blood Pressure Education Program has been published by the National Institutes of Health.2 This consensus document where, perhaps for the first time, obstetricians and internists* reached agreement on a number of controversial issues, will be highlighted in this article. In addition we discuss several important developments related to hypertension in pregnancy that have occurred since the previous review. 1 Space considerations limit us to selected citations, and the reader is invited to consult several texts, chapters, and reviews for a more extensive bibliography?-8
