Abstract

The hypermagnetizability anisotropy (Δη) governs the birefringence of a material in the presence of a magnetic field (the Cotton-Mouton effect). In this paper, accurate values of Δη for a series of optical frequencies are calculated for He. As well, estimates of the static values of Δ for Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe and CH 4 are given. The agreement with experiment is satisfactory.
