Abstract

A specific and common behavior disorder in children, the hyperkinetic syndrome, may be due to organic causes and is characterized by: hyperactivity; short attention span and poor powers of concentration; impulsiveness; irritability; explosiveness; variability; and poor school work. A laboratory procedure, the photo-Metrazol EEG, offers a means of explaining the mechanism and confirming the existence of this syndrome. It is often accompanied by emotional disturbances. It responds to amphetamine and, to some extent, to other medications. Psychologic guidance for the parents and psychotherapy for the children may be required. It tends to disappear by the time adulthood has been reached.
