Abstract

The solid state reaction of hematite with aluminium has been induced by mechanical alloying. Mossbauer spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction have been used to investigate the reaction products. The reaction was completed in a time longer than 15 min but shorter than 30 min. During the reaction a Fe(Al) bcc solid solution was obtained as a matrix, with Al2O3 as reinforcement. After prolonged milling both components were in a nanocrystalline paramagnetic state.
