Abstract
We give a very brief survey of the present ideas on hyperfine fields for dilute impurities in ferromagnetic hosts and for dilute magnetic impurities in non-magnetic hosts. There are three main groups of impurities corresponding to different partially filled atomic shells and so to different dominant hyperfine field mechanisms. These are the rare earths, the transition elements, and the non-magnetic elements having only s-p shells partially filled.
