Abstract

A patient had suffered for nearly two years from masseter cramps at the taste of sour fruit or at the touch of certain fabrics (sackcloth, diapers, wool, etc.). These unadaptive responses were reciprocally inhibited by gradual progress along two stimulus hierarchies: acid taste by sugar, the touch of rough fabrics by application of soothing ointments on the skin, and the masseter cramps by relaxation. After 12 sessions of 30 min the patient's difficulties had completely disappeared. A one-year follow-up showed neither relapse nor substitute neurosis.
