Abstract

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is currently defined by an absolute blood eosinophil count of more of 1500 cell per μL for more than 1 month and by multiorgan system infiltration. Eosinophilic colitis is an exceptionally rare inflammatory condition in which eosinophils infiltrate the colonic gut. It represents the least frequent manifestation of the wide spectrum of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders. We describe a case of an adult male patient with persistent eosinophilia for at least twenty-five years. During this long period he had repeated abdominal colics caused by acute appendicitis with peritonitis, enterocolitis, and pancreatitis: all episodes were associated with a marked increase in blood eosinophils, but without Ig E modification. Malignant transformation of hypereosinophilia has not been detected. Oral cortisone treatment was administered only for short periods of time.
