Abstract

Hypercholesterolemia represents increase of cholesterol level above 6.2 mmol/l in adults and above 4.5 mmol/l in children. Every fourth child in Slovakia aged 11-12 years has elevated cholesterol level. We investigated some relations between lipid profile, antioxidant status and parameters of oxidative stress. In serum of 34 hypercholesterolemic children and adolescents (av. age 16.37 ± 3.75 years) lipid profile, HDL-subfractions (Lipoprint Quantimetrix, Ltd, USA), parameters of oxidative stress – lipoperoxides (LP), iso-prostanes (isoP), antioxidant capacity (TEAC), uric acid (UA), arylesterase and lactonase activities of paraoxonase 1 were analysed. The positive correlations between LP and TAG and UA were observed (r=0.713, r=0.435, p<0.05) resp.) Positive correlation was determined for waist circumference (WC) and UA (r=0.699, p<0.05) and a trend for WC vs. LP (r=0.253, 0.05<p<0.1). Between WC and PON-L negative correlation was determined (r= -0.310, p<0.05). Correlations between HDL-subfractions and PON1-A were not significant, however, PON1-L activity showed negative correlations with large HDL subfractions and negative correlations with intermediate and small HDL subfractions. The results confirmed important role of lactonase activity of PON1 in relation to lipid profile and some oxidative stress markers in atherogenic risk of hypercholesterolemic children
