Abstract

A 32-year old slightly overweight female presented herself for examination complaining of abdominal pain, nausea, headaches and amenorrhea. After physical examination where an orange discoloration had been observed on her hands, soles and nasolabial folds, and history taking, it became apparent that she was a heavy consumer of raw carrots, tomatoes and other green vegetables. Upon biochemical examination, when excessive amounts of carotene were found in her blood, a diagnosis of hypercarotenemia was made. Once the excessive intake of food items high in carotene was reduced, our patient started to feel better within a week with respect to her earlier complaints about nausea, headaches and stomach ache, and a few days thereafter, her mestruation resumed. Her skin color returned to normal about six weeks later.
