Abstract

This paper focuses on hyperbole, a long neglected form of non-literal language despite its pervasiveness in everyday speech. Hyperbole (also referred to as exaggeration or overstatement) has been studied in rhetoric and in literary contexts, but only relatively recently in everyday contexts. This paper analyses hyperbole in everyday Cypriot Greek conversations from a conversation analytic perspective. The aim is to analyse hyperbole in order to identify its most prominent features such as lexico-grammatical features, context of occurrence, and recipient reception. In this study I present only two types of hyperbole. The first is expressed with numerical expressions and the second with impossible descriptions.
