Abstract

45.8% of the patients suffering from an acute haemorrhagic stroke presented a high serum bilirubin concentration in the first 5 days after the stroke. A parallel increase of direct bilirubin was observed. Normalisation of the bilirubin concentration was seen in the follow-up examination between the 6th and 15th day after the acute stroke. The parallel rise in the plasma of direct and total bilirubin in the haemorrhagic stroke patient suggests the possibility that intracranial pathology and increased intracranial pressure act together to cause changes in hepatic cell polarity.
