Abstract

The rapid and accurate evaluation of acute ischemic stroke has advanced dramatically with the newly available MRI techniques: magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), and perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI). Each imaging modality provides unique and valuable information: MRA demonstrates the presence or absence of vascular occlusion in large- and medium-sized vessels; DWI discloses the location and extent of ischemic brain tissue that has already manifested energy failure; and PWI provides information about the perfusion status of the microvasculature.
