Abstract
Abstract This paper reviews evidence that the hyperactive child syndrome is connected with the development of delinquent, antisocial behavior in childhood, adolescence, and later life. The evidence comes from childhood histories of adults with antisocial disorders, post facto and prospective follow-up studies of hyperactive children, from family studies of both hyperactive children and antisocial personalities, and from treatment studies. In addition, the possible mechanisms of the association between hyperactivity in childhood and delinquent behavior are considered. These include: the persistence of a physiological abnormality; genetic, familial, and environmental factors; and educational failure.
