Abstract
SUMMARY 1. The modification of a hygrothermograph to record temperature and relative humidity) on the same chart at different scales is described.2. The maximum distance separating the curves during the day phase has been termed the burning conditions index, and an alignment chart prepared to give this index from wet and dry bulb thermometer readings and humidity tables.3. The summation of dally 3 p.m. observations of the burning conditions index after rain has been correlated with inflammability as measured by indicator stick moisture content.4. A formula for danger rating based on the summation and current index has been prepared, and danger ratings compared with the occurrence of fires aon the Eastern Dorrigo, N.S.W.5. The use of the hygrothermograph chart and danger rating so obtained is suggested as a means of forecasting local fire danger.
