Abstract

Hydroxyl-terminated poly (azidomethyl ethylene oxide-b-butadiene-b-azidomethyl ethylene oxide) (GAP-PBD-GAP), an energetic triblock copolymer was synthesized via azidation of poly(chloromethyl ethylene oxide-b-butadiene-b-chloromethyl ethylene oxide) (PECH-PBD-PECH) using NaN 3 in dimethyl acetamide–toluene mixed solvents at 95°C. Hydroxyl-terminated GAP-PBD-GAP, thus obtained, was characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, GPC and thermal studies. Its potential as an energetic binder in ammonium perchlorate (AP)-based polyurethane (PU) propellant with toluene diisocyanate and trimethylol propane as curatives was also evaluated in terms of the burn rate of the propellant, and the mechanical property of gum-stock.
