Abstract

Rod shape Y2O3:Eu3+ were synthesized by using simple hydrothermal method. Characterizations of the samples were done with X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Increase of Eu3+ concentration in Y2O3 renders shift in Eu – O charge transfer band (CTB) to lower energy. PL emission indicates the asymmetric nature of Eu3+ surroundings. The calculated values of second order crystal field parameter corroborate the asymmetric environment of Eu3+. The improvement in the luminescence with the increase annealing temperature is realized from PL emission and decay lifetime studies. The quantum yield for Y2O3:Eu3+ (13 at.%) under 255 nm excitation is found to be 10 %.
