Abstract
Undoped and transition metal (Zn, Fe, Co) doped tin monoxide (SnO) nanocrystals have been synthesized by using the hydrothermal technique. The grown nanocrystals were characterized with respect to the determination of the formed phases, particle size, band gap and morphology, using the techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). The result indicates that the nanocrystals have exhibited tetragonal structure, wide absorption in the visible-light region and surface morphology shows that plate, sphere and cuboid likes structure. The optical band gap value of nanocrystals was estimated using the Kubela — Munk method. Tunable band gaps can be obtained by doping transition metals. An exponentially varying absorption edge was observed and explained in terms of the Urbach's tail.
