Abstract

A novel organic–inorganic hybrid vanadate complex [{Zn(2,2′-bpy)} 2V 8O 21] 1 (2,2′-bpy=2,2′-bipyridine) was synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of V 2O 5, ZnCl 2, 2,2′-bpy and water. Its structure was determined by elemental analyses, XPS spectra, TG analysis, IR spectrum and the single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystal data for 1: C 20H 16N 4O 21V 8Zn 2, triclinic, space group P−1, a=8.0610(16) A ̊ , b=9.7339(19) Å, c=11.613(2) Å, α=85.63(3)°, β=96.59(3)°, γ=72.13(3)°, Z=1 and R( F)=0.0456. The title compound contains an unusual two-dimensional vanadate network grafted with [Zn(2,2′-bpy)] 2+ complex. Furthermore, the vanadate layer in 1 consists of left-handed and right-handed helical chains, which are built up from {VO 5} square pyramids linked by {VO 4} tetrahedra and further interconnected to form the double helical chains.
